North Bennet Street School

Tuning up tools is a critical part of the curriculum; a dull tool is of no use to anyone.  This is my Grandfather’s Stanley #5 Jack Plane; good feeling to see it go to work again.

One of the introductory projects that we undertake is to make our mallet; this teaches turning, glue up, grain direction selection , as well as other hand techniques.

We also make our oilstone boxes.

Every project begins with a draft.  We learn how to produce accurate drafts, both full size and scaled size.  We also learn how to produce stock lists and cost estimates.   All of this is produced under the critical and watchful eye of Master Cabinetmaker Lance Patterson, Cabinet and Furniture Program, 1979.
