Yesterday marked a major milestone in my journey to becoming a cabinetmaker when I completed and got approved my final full-scale drafting exercise. At NBSS, students complete five full scale drafts, each increasing in difficulty. We draft a step table, a drum table, a frame and panel blanket chest, a drop front desk on frame, and finally, a Chippendale arm chair. Before moving from one draft to the next, each is thoroughly scrutinized by Lance and corrections made.
As someone who is not artistic at all and with no prior experience, these were extremely challenging for me, but with the exacting attention to detail that I learned in the Navy and much instruction from Lance, I successfully completed them.
I now move on to the next step which is to design, draft, then build a toolbox according to specific parameters. This project has been a fundamental of the cabinet and furniture making course since the beginning, and I am very excited about it.
